A Pastoral Message on Graduation

This time of year brings many celebrations. Across our parish and beyond, students are graduating from elementary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, trade schools, and graduate programs. Some are moving on to a new school, others to military service, careers, marriage, religious life, or new opportunities. Graduation is always a moment to pause, give thanks, and look forward with hope. This year, as we celebrated the graduation of the Saint Andrew School Class of 2026, I found myself reflecting on an image recently shared by Pope Leo XIV. The Holy Father spoke about handwoven tapestries, explaining how many individual threads, each unique in color and design, are woven together to create something beautiful. That image reminded me of a gift I received years ago from a friend who visited South America. She brought me a small handmade tapestry. It was colorful, intricate, and beautiful. Yet what caught my attention was that it was unfinished along the bottom. Loose threads hung freely from the edge. When I asked about it, she explained that this was intentional. The artisans believed that life itself is unfinished. Each person is given gifts, opportunities, relationships, and faith, but the tapestry is never complete until we contribute our own thread to the world around us. What a wonderful image for graduation. The graduates of Saint Andrew School have spent years weaving the first threads of their lives. Their parents, teachers, classmates, coaches, parishioners, and friends have all helped shape them into the young men and women they are becoming. They leave our school carrying knowledge, friendships, memories, and, most importantly, the gift of faith. Yet their tapestry is not finished. The same is true for every graduate in our parish community. Whether you are finishing eighth grade, graduating from high school, earning a college degree, completing professional training, or beginning a new chapter of life, graduation is not really an ending. It is the beginning of the next section of God's work in you. Building on the sacred scriptures selected for the parish school graduation, in his Letter to the Colossians (C. 3), Saint Paul reminds us what truly matters as we move forward in life: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and above all, love. These are the threads that make a life beautiful in God's eyes. In the Gospel of John (C. 15), Jesus tells His disciples: "I have called you friends." He then adds, "It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain." Those words are meant for every graduate. Your value is not measured by grades, diplomas, awards, salaries, titles, or accomplishments. Your deepest identity is found in being a beloved son or daughter of God. Christ has chosen you, loves you, and calls you to bear fruit that will last. As graduates move into the next chapter of life, two things are essential. First, remain faithful to daily prayer. A relationship with Christ grows through regular conversation with Him. Prayer keeps us grounded, focused, and open to God's guidance. Second, remain faithful to the Eucharist. The greatest gift the Church offers is not simply wisdom or moral teaching, but Jesus Christ Himself. In the Eucharist, He nourishes us, strengthens us, and accompanies us through every stage of life's journey. To the graduates of Saint Andrew School and to all graduates throughout our parish community: Congratulations and Thank You for the many ways you enrich our lives. We are proud of your accomplishments and grateful for the gifts you bring to the Church and the world. The tapestry is already beautiful. But it is not finished. God is still weaving, and some of the most important threads are yet to come.
