Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 22, 2026

This policy covers the Catholic Index website (catholicindex.org and catholicindex.ca) and the Catholic Index mobile app for iOS and Android.

Information We Collect

Website. We collect email addresses when you use features like saving parishes or lighting candles, and we use them solely to provide those services. When you light a candle, the prayer intention and the name you choose to show (or “Anonymous”) appear on the public Candle Wall.

Mobile app. The Catholic Index mobile app does not require an account. When you grant location permission, we use your location to find nearby parishes; location data is used in the moment and not stored on our servers. Search queries you enter are sent to our API to return results. We collect anonymous app usage data, crash reports, and performance data to keep the app working — none of which is linked to your identity. Some optional features, such as the Candle Wall, ask for an email address so we can provide them; details below.

MCP API. When you use Catholic Index through AI assistants (such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Cursor), we log tool call inputs including search locations, search queries, and church identifiers. These logs do not contain personal information such as names, email addresses, or IP addresses of end users.

Analytics. We use Umami, a self-hosted, cookie-free analytics tool, to understand how visitors use our website. No personal data or tracking cookies are involved.

Session replay. We use PostHog for anonymous usage analytics and session replay on both the website (10% of visits) and the mobile app, with all text inputs automatically masked. The Confession Companion is fully excluded from session replay — see the “Confession Companion” section below. For visitors in the EU and UK, website analytics data is stored only for the duration of your visit. For other visitors, a first-party cookie is used to understand return visits.

Confession Companion

Your examination of conscience stays on your device. We never collect which sins you select, anything you type, or how many items you review, and the Confession Companion screens are masked from session replay and blocked from screenshots. We see only anonymous feature usage, such as whether a session was started — and that is not tied to your identity.

The examination of conscience was inspired by ConfessIt, an open-source project (MIT License).

How We Use Your Information

Email addresses allow us to save your preferences and may be used to send occasional updates about new features. We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties.

MCP API logs are used for product analytics (understanding which tools and locations are most popular), abuse prevention, and rate limiting. Logs are not shared with third parties.

Third-Party Services

Catholic Index integrates with the following third-party services to provide its functionality:

  • YouTube — livestream and homily video links are returned to users
  • USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) — daily readings links
  • OpenAI — homily search queries are sent to OpenAI to generate semantic embeddings for search matching; queries are not used by OpenAI for training
  • PostHog — anonymous usage analytics on the website and mobile app; data is processed in the United States
  • Sentry — crash reports and performance data from the mobile app, used to keep the app stable and working

We do not share personal information with any of these services. Mobile app data sent to PostHog and Sentry is not linked to your identity. We do not use any data for advertising, and we do not share data with advertisers, ad networks, or data brokers.

Data Retention

Email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.

MCP API logs (tool name, search parameters, result counts, response times) are retained indefinitely for product analytics. These logs contain no personal identifiers.

Your Rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of any personal data we hold about you by contacting us. We will respond within 30 days.

We do not sell personal information. California residents may exercise their rights under the CCPA by contacting us using the information below.

If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have additional rights under the GDPR, including the right to withdraw consent at any time, request erasure of your data, and lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Unsubscribe

Any emails we send will include an unsubscribe link. You can opt out at any time.

International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed and stored in the United States. By using Catholic Index, you acknowledge this transfer. We use first-party infrastructure and do not share personal data with third-party advertisers.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
