My Dear Parishioners,
n this weekend's Gospel for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells His disciples to "Pray that the master of the harvest will send out laborers." Immediately after that, He vests them with power and sends them out to preach and work miracles.
When we pray for more laborers in the vineyard, we might imagine that God will answer this prayer by calling many men to the priesthood. While we certainly need more good priests, the Gospel helps us to see that God doesn't want us to just pray for more priests. Or somebody else to go and spread the Good News. God wants to send us!
By asking the disciples to pray to the Father to send more laborers to gather the harvest, Jesus was inviting them into a space where their hearts could become more open to being sent out by the Lord. Indeed, God wants us to pray for this same need so that we in turn might grow in our awareness that by Baptism, all of us are called to be missionary disciples to the people we live with, whom we work, study with, play with, both friend and foe. For the kingdom to grow, it takes all of us, not just priests to accomplish it.
As members of the "priesthood of the faithful", which we enter when, with Holy Chrism at Baptism we are anointed, we now share then in the mission of Jesus. So as members of that priesthood, we share in the sacrifice offered by the ordained priest when we join our hearts and our lives to the Eucharistic sacrifice. As we pray together in the Liturgy with the priest as our leader, we can also
offer the needs of our relatives, the Church, and our world.
As "prophets", we need to give public witness to the Gospel. This might look different for each of us. Not everyone goes to the pulpit to preach a homily, but we all need to preach with our lives. Do the people around us know that we are followers of Christ? Do they know it not only by our words but also by the way we act? Can they see it in our love? Our forgiveness? And our compassion for others?
And as "kings" we need to be servants of all. The kingship of Jesus wasn't about worldly power and honor. A true king is concerned for the welfare of others. We can pray for the needs of the lonely and poor, but we also have to be willing to be the one sent to help them.
When I look at the pictures each week in our bulletin of all the different ministries in our parish that reach out to those in need, or who volunteer to be catechists, or who labor in our schools for a much smaller salary than what they would make in a public setting. I am edified to see your response to that call. Let us ask our Eucharistic Lord to help all of us to respond to His call in whatever way we can. The smallest little effort is great in His eyes.
May God bless you.
